This is a very easy knot to master for a beginner. It is used to tie two different diameter lines together like your tippet to your leader. If you're tying two pieces of similar diameter larger line together or want a smaller knot that will slide through the rod guides easier, the blood knot may be the better choice. But if you want a simple, strong knot that is easier to tie than the blood knot, than this is the knot for you.

Ready?  Here we go...

Steps in how to tie a surgeons knot:

1. Lay the ends of your tippet and leader side by side.

 2. Hold the two lines together and tie a loose overhand knot.

 3. Now double the knot like in the following diagram by making another pass through the overhand knot. This is a little hard to describe but a picture is worth a thousand words.

4. Lastly grab the free ends of the knot and firmly tighten the knot.

5. Trim the ends off leaving just a little bit to allow for some movement.

6. Test the knot for strength.
